Tax Accountant

The primary responsibility of this position is the preparation of federal and state income tax returns and quarterly estimates for partnerships in which Southern Company is the Tax Matters Partner. Other responsibilities are listed below. This position will be located in Atlanta, GA at the Georgia Power Corporate Headquarters building.

Job Requirements

Education Requirements:

  • BS in Accounting required

  • CPA highly preferred

Experience Requirements:

  • Minimum of 4 years preparing complex federal & state partnership returns involving HLBV accounting

  • Income tax research for both corporations and partnerships

  • Extensive use of tax return preparation software (preferably CorpTax)

  • Utility accounting experience would be a plus

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Ability to apply thorough technical knowledge of corporate & partnership income tax returns

  • Thorough understanding of utility issues and accounting would be a plus

  • Advanced MS Excel skills

  • Strong oral and written communication skills

  • Good business judgment

Job Duties & Responsibilities

  • Prepare federal and state partnership returns that involve HLBV accounting

  • Prepare quarterly tax estimates and quarterly updates of partners’ §704(b) capital accounts

  • Research tax law and determine optimal tax treatment of complex transactions and document conclusions

  • Participate in meetings and other efforts to ensure that tax issues are given appropriate attention as new deals are contemplated and negotiated

  • Analyze agreements and prepare summaries of pertinent matters for our files

  • Work with tax personnel of partner entities to gather/provide information, resolve issues, and establish/maintain good working relationships

  • Assist our subsidiaries’ tax accounting personnel in identifying and understanding book/tax differences
