The individual will work in Southern Nuclear's Fleet Design – Civil and Seismic Group and will be responsible for Fleet Governance, Oversight, Support and Perform assignments related to Civil and Seismic matters at Plants Farley, Hatch, and Vogtle.

The ideal candidate with have a design background in civil engineering that will allow them to understand, review, or occasionally perform civil and structural calculations related to hydrology, external flooding, structural steel, concrete, soil mechanics, and foundations in compliance with existing and new industry standards, codes, and regulations.

The ideal candidate will have experience in seismic equipment qualification, or exhibit a strong desire to develop seismic equipment qualification skills. Members of the Fleet Design – Civil and Seismic Group are responsible for performing seismic equipment qualification activities for nuclear plant components and sub-components and/or oversight and direction to site counterparts and AEs for design execution and standardization.

Responsibilities will include providing engineering oversight reviews of a variety of products and documents generated by both internal and external sources. This position is responsible for improving standards, behaviors and accountability, developing and managing procedural guidance, developing and maintaining specifications, ensuring outage success, and providing subject matter expertise.


Job Experience and Education

  • Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering from an ABET accredited college or university is required.
  • At least 5 years of nuclear power plant experience in civil/structural design is preferred.
  • At least 5 years of experience at a nuclear power plant site is preferred.
  • Experience in the preparation of nuclear power plant Engineering Change (EC) Packages is preferred.
  • A Professional Engineer’s License (Civil or Structural) is desired.

Job Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Strong working knowledge of civil/structural and civil/seismic fundamentals is required.
  • Strong working knowledge of civil/hydrology fundamentals and/or seismic equipment qualification is a plus.
  • Experience in the SQUG GIP (Seismic Qualification Utility Group Generic Implementation Procedure) methodology is a plus.
  • Working knowledge of nuclear power plant design, operating requirements, and industry codes and standards is required.
  • Ability to solve problems and make sound engineering judgments, based on experience and proper application of good engineering practices is required.
  • Proficiency in structural analysis using GT STRUDL is desired.
  • Proficiency in hydrologic and free surface hydraulic analysis using HEC/HMS, FLO-2D, or similar hydrologic/hydraulic analytical programs is a plus.
  • Proficiency in MathCAD is a plus.
  • Strong technical writing and oral communication skills are required.
  • Proficiency in the use of Microsoft Office Products is required.

  • Develop Fleet Governance and provide Oversight related to Civil, Structural, and Seismic issues.
  • Performing Fleet Civil and Seismic Technical Oversight Reviews of a variety of engineering products and documents generated by both internal and external sources.
  • Supporting and/or Performing additional design assignments needed to maintain the plant design bases or respond to a plant emergency.
  • Provide acceptance reviews of civil/hydrologic (river hydraulics, precipitation events, etc.) calculations in support of nuclear plant design bases.
  • Supporting or Performing civil/structural and/or civil/seismic calculations in support of nuclear plant design bases..
  • Performing seismic equipment qualification activities for nuclear plant components and sub-components
  • Supporting or Performing the preparation of engineering specifications in support of design and licensing activities.
  • Investigate / resolve engineering issues in accordance with the corrective action program.
  • Interface with site engineers, corporate engineers from other departments, as well as SNC vendors of engineering services and analyses.


Successful candidate must be available to work outside of normal duty hours during emergencies as needed. Overnight travel sometimes required. Occasional short-term assignment at a plant site may be required.The successful candidate must be willing to travel to SNC Sites, test facilities, or other industry locations up to 25% of the time .

Please note: This position may require the successful completion of the SNC Initial Engineering Training as a condition of continued employment. The training is approximately 4 weeks long and is a rigorous period that may require studying after work hours.
