Utility Accounting Manager


The purpose of the position is to ensure the delivery of timely, accurate and GAAP and regulatory compliant financial statements for all fiscal periods for our distribution companies as well as supports internal and external financial reporting. This role provides internal customers with accounting assistance and guidance. Reviews of monthly financial statements for distribution companies and ensure they are delivered to management timely, accurate which includes review the journal entries and account reconciliation of the Staff Accountants and provide guidance and correcting journal entries as required. Provide internal and external auditors with information required to perform annual and quarterly audits. Researches and reports on significant accounting issues. Lead projects and analysis regarding process improvements, technical accounting treatments along with system upgrades and changes. This role has to work well with strict deadlines.


  • Manages assistance to Rates & Regulatory Affairs department in response to data requests and the filing of periodic regulatory requests and FERC reports.

  • Manage and ensure the accuracy of the Distribution Financial Statements, including analytical reviews of financial statements and account reconciliations.

  • Manages and coordinate the monthly FERC and ICC process to ensure that regulatory reports are accurate and following the FERC chart of accounts.

Business Acumen:

• Critically analyzing financial information for accuracy and reasonableness and provides variance explanations.

• Provides analysis for complex financial data for potential Company transactions to make surer that they are consistent with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and regulatory accounting.

• Performs accounting research as needed to ensure transactions are recorded in accordance with GAAP and regulatory.

• Possesses strong analytical skills.

• Engagement:

• Presents balance sheet with variance reports to VP of Accounting.

• Assists internal customers with recommendations on recording transactions; explains the impact to the general ledger and financial statements.

• Manages staff selection, development, and retention.

• Coach’s staff, provides feedback, and evaluates performance.

• Manages day-to-day functions of general ledger.

• Implement process and system changes as necessary to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of the general ledger, development of financial results and internal and external reports.

• Follows organizational policies and procedures and ensures staff is in compliance.


Required :

• BA/BS degree in Accounting

Related Work Experience:

Required :

• 8 years progressive levels of accounting and financial reporting experience

• 2 years managing an Accounting or Finance function


• equivalent academic education and experience

Preferred :

• Public accounting experience

• Natural gas industry experience

• Certified Public Accountant (CPA)

• Advanced knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and regulatory accounting

• Demonstrated problem-solving abilities, including the ability to critically think and present new or creative solutions

• Skilled in using Microsoft Office applications (Excel, Word, PowerPoint)

• Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) – advanced proficiency

Travel Requirements:

• Occasional Traveler (5-20% travel): The incumbent will be required to travel on occasion. Trips may require air travel and/or overnight stay away from home for one or more nights.
