Southern Nuclear, a subsidiary of Southern Company, manages and operates six nuclear power electric generating plants that provide approximately 20 percent of the electricity used in Alabama and Georgia. Southern Nuclear is leading the nuclear renaissance by building the first new U.S. nuclear reactors in more than 25 years.


The I&C Design Engineer will lead the development of instrumentation and control design changes. Provide leadership, guidance, and oversight to vendor/architect engineer developed design changes associated with Plant Farley's instrumentation and controls (I&C) systems. The I&C Design Engineer will report to the Site Design department.


  • Develop digital design change packages including: software and hardware modifications, testing, configuration control, calculations, and scaling documents

  • Develop troubleshooting plans for digital and analog components

  • Develop and revise I&C calculations

  • Develop and revise site scaling documents

  • Develop expertise and knowledge on scaling, uncertainty calculations, and setpoints

  • Mentor department engineers as necessary

  • Develop digital I&C system expertise and knowledge

  • Participate in industry groups (EPRI, IEEE, NEI, etc.) supporting digital I&C systems

  • Participate in SNC Fleet initiatives related to digital I&C systems and setpoint controls

  • Participate in development of digital replacement strategies



  • Bachelor of Science (B.S.) degree in Engineering from an ABET accredited college or university is required (Engineering Technology cannot be considered) or an active PE license

  • EIT/FE or Professional Engineer Registration is desired

Job Requirements

  • Commercial nuclear power plant experience in digital system design, analysis, licensing, operation, and/or maintenance is desired

  • Knowledge and understanding commercial nuclear power plant regulations, codes, and standards in, human factors engineering (HFE), cyber security, and software control is desired

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • 3 years engineering experience in digital instrumentation and controls is preferred

  • 3 years nuclear power plant related engineering experience is preferred

  • Engineering experience with Emerson Ovation and/or GE Fanuc / Mark VIe controls preferred

  • Engineering experience with scaling, uncertainty calculations, and setpoint controls preferred

  • Excellent oral and written communications skills

  • Must convey a clear vision of the future and make principled, data-based practical decisions that take critical factors into account

  • Capacity to work through conflicts to create win-win situations

  • Must hold self and others accountable for superior results and living the Southern Style

  • Strong team player

Other Requirements

  • The successful candidate must meet background screening and NRC Fitness for Duty requirements

  • Must be willing to travel to vendor facilities to perform oversight of design, development, and testing of digital I&C systems

Please note: This position may require the successful completion of the SNC Initial Engineering Training as a condition of continued employment. The training is approximately 14 weeks long and is a rigorous period that may require studying after work hours.
